Plastic surgery treatment options for scars in Plano, TX
Trauma, previous surgery, acne, and infections may leave scars. Dr. Patrick Obasi of Noble Cosmetic Surgery in Plano, TX offers plastic surgery options for scars.
Every scar is unique in size, shape, thickness, color, and location. The same treatment may not work for every scar. A consultation is required to determine which treatment method is best. Dr. Obasi offers the following surgical and non-surgical treatments:
- Topical medication
- Chemical peels
- Laser resurfacing
- Injectable medication or dermal fillers
- Surgical removal
- Skin grafts
The options available range from non-invasive to invasive. A single treatment may provide significant improvement for some patients, whereas others may need a combination of treatments. Dr. Obasi’s preference is to begin with the least invasive procedure and progress from there, depending on the severity of the scar.
What to expect
If you have a thick scar that extends deeper into the tissue, a surgical incision may be needed. The scar tissue is excised and the area is sutured by a formally trained plastic surgeon who understands how to place the stitches so the scar is less conspicuous. For some larger scars, a skin graft may be needed. This means skin is taken from another area and is used to replace the scar tissue.
Following your procedure, you may notice swelling, discomfort, or discoloration for up to two weeks. The scar will continue to heal and fade in the weeks that follow. The purpose of scar revision surgery is to reduce the appearance of the scar; making it more consistent with the tone and texture of the surrounding skin. A scar cannot be completely erased but treatments can improve the way it looks.
