How Botox works

Botox is a popular cosmetic injectable that has been used for years in relaxing wrinkles and folds on the face caused by dynamic muscle tension. This FDA-approved product is both safe and effective in lessening the appearance of aging skin. Botox is formulated with botulinum toxin type A and works by reducing contraction of the facial muscles. This, in turn, can smooth the skin and address wrinkles and folds. With Botox injections, certain areas of the face can be restored to a more youthful appearance for many months. Reinjection is often needed every six to nine months for most of our male patients.

Are results immediate?

There are many injectables on the market today known as dermal fillers that provide immediate results. Botox, however, does take approximately one week to work on moderate to severe lines and wrinkles. This is because the medication works on the muscles and is not adding gel or volume directly into the creases and folds in the same way a dermal filler can. Some patients may opt to combine treatments and have Botox injections and dermal fillers performed at the same time for more dramatic results in a shorter period.

What downtime is associated with Botox injections for men?

Dr. Patrick Obasi of Noble Cosmetic Surgery encourages his male patients to come in during their lunch hour for treatment. Patients can return right back to work, school, or other activities the same day as their Botox injections. However, there may be some redness and discomfort in the injection area, but this is often minor and well-tolerated by most of our patients. Patients should follow specific aftercare instructions given to them by their doctor, including avoidance of alcohol and certain medications and supplements for several days following the injection to minimize the development of bruising. There are often little, if any, side effects of Botox injections. These complications can be discussed with the doctor during the consultation visit.

Who is a candidate for Botox?

Any adult patient, male or female, who wants to counteract fine lines and wrinkles caused by the muscles are encouraged to visit with the team of Noble Cosmetic Surgery to determine if Botox can help. An assessment is completed, and patients are urged to provide their full medical history. This helps the doctor decide if Botox is appropriate for their needs. Patients with more severe development of wrinkles and folds on the face that are combined with sagging skin or skin laxity may still be a better candidate for plastic surgery options such as a facelift. During the consultation, patients will also view before and after photos of many patients before them who have had success with Botox injections in the past. Patients should also have realistic expectations as to what can be achieved with cosmetic injectables versus cosmetic surgery options.

How can a patient keep the results from Botox?

Botox is not a permanent fix to aging skin. Instead, it can be used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and folds that develop over time. Reinjection is needed every four to six months to maintain the results.
