What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is the surgery of the eyelids. The surgeons go into either the upper eyelid or the lower eyelid and take off excess skin.

Another thing that can be done during Blepharoplasty is to take off excess fat deposits.

What are the Types of Blepharoplasty?

There are two types of Blepharoplasty. One is the Upper Blepharoplasty, where you take off excess skin +/- any excess fat deposits.

Then there is Lower Blepharoplasty, where taking off the excess skin is called Subsidiary Blepharoplasty.

If taking out only the eyelid’s excess fat deposits, it is called Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty, and this is done without making an incision on the eyelid.

What are the risks of Blepharoplasty?

The most dangerous risk is Retrobulbar Hematoma, where you have a blood collection after the surgery. This, if not addressed immediately, will lead to blindness.

The other risks with regards to Blepharoplasty include taking off too much skin. This can lead to the patient not being able to close their eyes when they sleep.

Another risk is leaving a scar, especially on the lower eyelid. So you have to be very careful and talk to the patients about leaving a scar on the lower eyelid.

The upper eyelids will heal very well because any experienced surgeon would scar along the eyelid crease.

Who is an ideal candidate for a Blepharoplasty?

Anybody that comes in with excess skin/fat either on the upper eyelid or lower eyelid is an ideal candidate.

You have to assess the patient to ensure that your patient does not have a droopy brow that might be causing the eye to close or have droopiness.

A blepharoplasty is a rejuvenating cosmetic surgical procedure that may be performed on the upper and/or lower eyelids.

An upper blepharoplasty may include excision of drooping eyelid skin, repair of the muscle that opens the eyes, and removal of excess fat.

A lower blepharoplasty corrects under eye bags with repositioning and possible removal of redundant fat and skin. It also treats sagging lower lids that may reveal excess white space beneath your iris (the colored circular portion of your eyes surrounding your black pupil).

With age, skin stretches and muscles weaken. While the face tends to lose volume, fatty deposits above the lashes and under the eyelids, causing sagging eyebrows make this area puffy and droopy.

The blepharoplasty procedure at Noble Cosmetic Surgery is appropriate if you’d like to tighten up the skin around your eyes, improve the appearance of sagging or wrinkles, and have younger, more alert-looking eyes.

In addition to impacting your appearance, sagging skin around the eyes can impair vision. Peripheral (side) vision is most commonly affected. A blepharoplasty procedure makes your eyes look younger and reduces the risk of vision complications.

Dr. Obasi and Dr. Olumba perform the blepharoplasty as an outpatient procedure. First, you are marked for the procedure by the surgeon, then you’re given an oral or IV sedative so that you are comfortable throughout the surgical process.

Treating the upper area first, a precise incision is made along the fold of the eyelid. Excess skin and fat is removed and the underlying muscles are tightened. The incision is then closed with fine sutures.

If your lower lids need to be addressed, an incision is made below the lashes or inside the lid. The excess fat is removed or redistributed and then the skin is repositioned and tightened before closing the incision.

You’re monitored closely directly following the procedure and sent home with post-operative instructions about cleaning and caring for your eyelids. You may also be prescribed eye drops or ointments to assist with the healing process.

After a few days, you’ll return to Noble Cosmetic Surgery to have the stitches removed. Most patients resume a regular routine in about ten days.
